Created entirely through stop-motion wood carving, block printing, and carved wooden sculpture, "Patterns" gives a unique and exciting window into the history of American Whaling and its impact on the world.

The Charles W. Morgan, built in 1841, is the last wooden whaleship in the world: a living monument to the age of whaling. The ship undergoes a process of continuous renewal, and at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut, she is currently being painstakingly restored piece by piece. Soon, she will be able to sail again, not as a hunter of whales, but as a symbol of education and change.

Like carvings on ancient cave walls, the patterns and stories of hundreds of years of life, growth, death, and renewal are etched into the wood of the Morgan. As the ship sails, more patterns emerge and weave together, forming a living and growing wooden tapestry of the global community that sailed aboard the Morgan.
